Joseph P Cirone > NOKESVILLE, VA (May 19, 2007) – As Nokesville resident Byron Barefoot (left) enjoys a side-splitting laugh; seven year-old Tiffany Adkins of Manassas Park, VA (right) struggles to keep her balance on a rope ladder climb, just before falling into the hay pile below. Barefoot said the attraction, part of the annual Nokesville Day celebration, has been setup by the Nokesville Church of the Brethren for the last 26 years. The twisting action of the rope attracts and challenges adults and children of all ages. Climbing to the top of the ladder, setup on an incline between two posts, is difficult. Few escape falling into the waiting hay below. The fire department and its members were an integral part of the annual Nokesville Day celebration. The department’s Ladies Auxiliary began the day’s events with a Country Breakfast open to the community. Members staffed fire and rescue apparatus from both of its fire stations (Prince William County Fire Stations 5 and 25), as well as a first aid and volunteer recruitment booth along the celebration’s parade route. After the parade, the department opened its doors to the public once again; performed a simulated emergency rescue from a crashed vehicle, tearing it apart to extricate a trapped victim; and allowed the public to tour its vehicles, fire station and an Inova Fairfax Hospital Medical Evacuation Helicopter (AirCare One) that landed next to the fire station, to help celebrate the beginning of Emergency Medical Services Week and to help recruit additional volunteers.
